Statistics is a set of tools to help us compare apples to oranges; to compare one group of things to another group of things and identify similarities and differences. Comparisons can include group to group, individual to group, and individual to individual in the context of a group.
Comparison of items is critical for quality control, grading, or evaluation of any item. Does it fit into prescribed categories? It also helps us notice exceptional items: exceptional values, exceptional ideas, and exceptional people.
Statistics are necessary for research, business, and engineering. They can be helpful for students or anyone with a desire for logic and perspective.
A basic understanding of percentages is helpful for learning the statistics lessons.
Math is traditionally taught by stacking abstract ideas on other abstract ideas. If we struggle with any of the ideas, the whole stack can fall like a house of cards.
This site takes a non-traditional approach to teaching math. We attempt to tie words and ideas to images, sounds, and jokes to teach foundational concepts. When the foundation is set, traditional teaching can be more successful.
A foundational grasp of statistical concepts facilitates good decision making, logical thinking, and evaluation of others’ claims. It will also facilitate traditional learning of statistical methods for research.
